1 The Ritual of Munjung and Bongkar Bumi Among the Sundanese People (An Antropological Study in Leuwimunding, Majalengka, West Java) Ibi Syatibi Syari’ah Faculty of Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University Yogyakarta Abstract Munjung and Bongkar Bumi are rituals as well as cultural expressions for welcoming planting time and rainy season among the Sundanese people in Leuwimunding, Majalengka, West Java. These two rituals, in the combination form between slametan and tasyakuran, have in-depth philosophy for farmer communities in their efforts to keep the nature in harmony. Munjung is performed by way of tahlilan and distributing paros (i.e. ready to eate cooked-rice parcel) around burial areas. Meanwhile, Bongkar Bumi is performed by carrying out religious learning in mosque and the shadow puppet show in Hulu Dayeuh. Although currently carried out by stakeholders of the village only, tahlilan, nyuguh and kidung in Hulu Dayeuh constitute the santified form of repect over their ancestors that will bless the village. In the sense of aculturation, these two rituals can be considered as the combination between Islam and local culture. Key words: ritual tradition, local culture, acculturation, Islam, syncretism A. Introduction Munjung and Bongkar Bumi are rituals in the form of religio-traditional ceremony for welcoming planting time. The term Munjung means ‘to adore’ or to perform worshipping. In Islam, the term Munjung then comes to be translated as ziarah, that is, devotional visit and conducting series of prayers in burial places of ancestors. Meanwhile, the term Bongkar Bumi that in other term called ngaguar bumi, means to open the earth, in order that the soil gives its fertility for all people in the region. These practices of rituals, which originally come from agrarian communities, in fact has been found not only within the Sundanese people but also has been turning into practice in many Javanese communities of which are agrarian
