1 USE OF LIGHT IN URBAN SPACE IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY FROM ISTANBUL Asst. Prof.Dr. Emel BRER Instr. Elif Mıhçıolu BLG Res.Asst. Serhat KUT Abstract Representation in architectural design education is critical when using imagination as the clear significant motivation, establishing the relationship between meaning, concept and form. Architecture is anywhere that time, space and life exist. In this context, it is crucial to teach the necessary ways of thinking, perceiving and finally representing to convey the ability of establishing multi- sided and flexible relationships. In this case study, “light” is considered as an important architectural and urban component through three-dimensional modeling and computer-aided presentation techniques. The effects of light in the urban environment through the case studies of Bakırköy and Kadıköy shall be studied by the students of architecture and the results shall be interpreted from the point of light in architectural and urban design. Keywords: Architectural Design Education, Environmental Design, Urban Space, Urban Lighting, Representation, 3D Modeling, Simulation Introduction Light should be considered as an important component through the design process. In architectural education, lighting design, use and prevention of daylight is discussed during related technical courses such as “Environmental Control” in order to support the Architectural Design Studio. In Architectural Design Studio lighting design should be taken as a key issue affecting the urban space. A well-lit urban space can be inviting, providing a sense of well-being and security. A successful lighting design can also give the city an identity of its own
