Twist, Mariah Pellowski & Eric Huse University of Wisconsin-Stout Background The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) has become an "applied research institute" (Bomar et al., 2014). The definition of research at this university is the following, “The original, uniquely human endeavors that contribute intellectually or creatively to a discipline.” In undergoing the transition to becoming an applied research institute, one of the key areas identified as needing greater attention is greater opportunity for undergraduate research involvement, particularly in a student's first or second year of college. Mixed data study of faculty/academic staff who are engaging in applied research with undergraduate students Questions asked on mixed data instrument were based on scholarly literature (Blumer et al., 2014; Mumford et al., 2007; Thrush et al., 2007) The survey was administered via two different procedures Procedure 1: Questions were asked verbally in face-to-face meetings between undergraduate research assistant Procedure 2: Questions were asked and responded to via online survey The survey had two versions: Original, long version with a total of 35 questions Shorter version with a total of 18 questions Methodology Discussion & Implications Results Challenges working 1 st and 2 nd year UG research Students lack skills/knowledge, commitment, confidence, initiative Resources needed for UG research Money/funding, release time, supplies/equipment, improvement to campus UG grant process Current research culture Multiple Cultures/Definitions of research Faculty burnout/workload Need for money and resources References Blumer, M.
