AbstrAct
IntroductIon Simultaneouspancreas‑kidneytransplantation(SPK)isassociatedwithhighrisk
ofinfectiouscomplications.
objEctIvEs Theaimofthestudywastoevaluatetheincidenceofbacterialinfectionswithin
3monthsafterSPKtransplantation.
PAtIEntsAndmEthods 17patientswithtype1diabetesattheageof32–54years(meanage
42.5±7.1)wereretrospectivelyanalyzedwithin3monthsafterSPK.
rEsuLts Nosepticcomplicationswereobservedin2patients(12%).Intheremaining15patients
(88%),atleast1(from1to5,atotalof30)infectionepisodewasobservedduringfollow‑up.
Theinfectionswerelocated:onlyatthesurgicalsite(1patient–6.7%),onlyintheurinarytract(6
patients–40%),bothatthesurgicalsiteandintheurinarytract(7patients–46.7%),atthesurgical
siteandinblood(1patient–6.7%).2groupsofmicrobeswerepredominant,namelyenterococci
representedby1species, E.faecium(13isolates)andtheso‑calledintestinalbacilli, Enterobacte-
riaceae(19isolates).NomethicillinresistantStaphylococcusaureusstrainswereisolated.Candida
speciesfungiwereisolatedonly3times.
concLusIons Inourstudyonly2typesofinfectionswereobserved(urinarytractandsurgicalsite
infections)andeachofthemcomprisednearlyhalfofallthesepticepisodesrecorded.Gram‑negative
bacilliwerecollectedmoreoftenthanGram‑positivecocci,bothfromthesurgicalsiteandurinary
tractinfections.Allinfectionsendedwithfullrecovery.
