Journal of Chemical Crystallography, Vol. 34, No. 3, March 2004 ( C 2004) Crystal structure of (ethylenediammonium- N , N -di-3-propanoic acid) tetrachloropalladate(II) complex G.N. Sabo (1) Received June 20, 2002 The title compound was obtained by a synthesis from ethylenediamine-N, N -di-3-propanoic acid dihydrochloride (H 2 eddp · 2HCl) and potassium hexachloropalladate(IV) (molar ratio 1:1, in water). Its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction: mono- clinic space group P 2 1 / n, a = 8.198(1), b = 10.282(1), c = 9.080(1) ˚ A, β = 103.62(1) , V = 743.9(2) ˚ A 3 , and Z = 2. The dianionic complex has a square-planar coordination geometry with four chloro ligands, and ethylenediamine- N , N -di-3-propanoic acid as di- cation in the second coordination sphere. This is the first reported Pd(II) structure with uncoordinated H 2 eddp. KEY WORDS: Palladium(II) complex; eddp; crystal structure; square-planar geometry. Introduction The ethylenediamine-N, N -di-3-propanoate ion (eddp) can act as bidentate, tridentate, and most often as tetradentate ligand. 1 Geometri- cal isomerism of corresponding metal com- plexes has been an interesting field studied by a number of groups. 111 The crystal structure of ethylenediamine-N, N -di-3-propanoic acid has been described. 12,13 Metal complexes with this ligand are known only with eddp being a coor- dinating ligand. 14,15 (1) Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade, Studentski trg 16, P.O. Dickinson 16 reported the crystal structures of potassium and ammonium tetrachloropalla- date(II). The anion in our work forms a square- planar structure, as is expected for palladium(II) complex.
