Subject and source The genus Marlierea Cambess belongs to Myrtaceae (Landrum and Kawasaki, 1997). Leaves of Marlierea schottii Legrand were collected at Sergipe state, northeast Brazil and a voucher specimen (No.1576) has been deposited at the Herbarium of Federal University of Sergipe. Leaves of Marlierea grandifolia Berg. were collected at Espı´rito Santo state, southeast Brazil and a voucher specimen (No. 303) deposited at the Herbarium of Reserva Florestal de Linhares. 2. Previous work Until now no phytochemical study has been carried out with Marlierea. The isolated substances are also found in several genera of Myrtaceae (Haron et al., 1992). *Corresponding author.
