The effects of economic crisis on the creative and cultural industries (2008-2012): a regional analysis (EU-28) using location quotient Lefteris Gaitanidis, Master student in the Department of Economic and Regional Development, Panteion University, Athens Greece, left.gaita@gmail.com Vasilis Avdikos, Lecturer, Department of Economic and Regional Development, Panteion University, Athens Greece, v.avdikos@gmail.com Abstract 1 The paper attempts to record and analyze the regional disparities (NUTS 2 regions) in the creative and cultural industries during the economic crisis and across the European Union territory. The paper uses micro-data (by Eurostat) for employment in the creative and cultural industries in 87 regions of the EU-28 and by the method of Location Quotient (LQ) attempts to analyze the changing geography of the creative concentrations in the European regions, during the economic crisis (2008-2012). The analysis shows that employment rates in CCI have grown in specific regions, such as capital-regions and medium sized regions of North and Central Europe. However, when we take a look at the level of spatial concentration of CCI between 2008 and 2012 we find that the above- mentioned trend is not evident. Moreover, we find that CCI employment change in the regional level is correlated with changes in total regional employment and changes in the level of regional GDP per capita. 1 To cite this paper: Gaitanidis, L. and Avdikos, V.
