Turkish Journal of Arts and Social Sciences Volume 1, Number 1, September 2015 A Qualitative Research into the Musical Preferences and Tastes of University Students Studying at the Music Education Departments Mesleki M(zik Eğitimi Almakta Olan Üniversite Öğrencilerinin M(zik Tercihleri ve Beğenileri Üzerine Nicel Bir Araştırma Tarkan YAZICI 1 , Dilan İRVEN 2 Abstract Key Words Students trained in vocational music who are acquainted with certain types of music may have to engage in other types of music in non-educational contexts during their formal education. These encounters help them form their own attitudes to music and preferences for particular types of music. This behavior may lead to negative consequences that may appear when they are forming their identity in their vocations both during and after their education period. This study was carried out with 121 students at the State Conservatory of the Dicle University in 2012-2013. The study aims to identify the students’ qualification levels and opinions regarding their musical tastes and preferences. It is a mix-method study that employed a quantitative research model by using surveys. The findings show that the environment and the music offered by the media influenced adversely their preferences for the music types they were trained for.
