ISSN: 1943-6114 :: 3(02):31–38 (2011) Copyright c 2011 by InternationalJournal.org COVERING OF RUSSIAN-GEORGIAN AUGUST 2008 WAR IN TIME MAGAZINE Dali Osepashvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia INTRODUCTION The Russian-Georgian August war of 2008 wasn’t left beyond the attention of international media. Special research was devoted to the coverage of this war by the world famous newspapers and TV (channels) [1]. Highlighting the war events by the influential weekly magazine “The Time” was not the matter of less importance. This was just the aim of our research. The goal of the article is to represent the outcomes of the research how August War 2008 between Georgia-Russia was highlighted on the pages of the important every weekly magazine “Time”. I use a content-analysis method make analysis the informational sources and suggests the frequency of mentioning of these persons and framing method. In the work the attention is paid to the terminology and main words which are mentioned regarding this armed military conflict on the pages of “Time”. In addition attention is drawn to the major messages mentioned on the pages of the magazine for estimation of this war. The magazine “Time” reflects War beginning on August 8 a bit later and it is the main topic in the number of 25 August. The great interest of the magazine towards this topic is certified by the article published on the first page with the title “How to Stop New Cold War (sub-title: What Russia’s invasion of Georgia tells us about today’s world”), its author is a famous specialist in Politics – Zbigniew Brzezinski. Five month research period (August-December 2008) was chosen. The research theme can be found only in three issues. Eight publications were dedicated to this topic on the pages of this magazine though the readers of “The Time” have opportunity to be familiarized with other analytical materials distributed by various news agencies and TV companies through the electronic version (www.time.com/georgia). 38 articles and 17 photo facts from the conflict zone are placed on the journal blog. PUBLICATIONS TYPE It’s interesting whether these materials are informative or analytical. According to our research it’s obvious that mostly analytical publications dominate. In fact we don’t meet pure news or no comment facts typical of such magazine but we can come across the news magazine stories, which is characteristing of such news magazines. At some extent these stories resemble the news but at the same time they include personal opinion. On the whole out of 8 publications dedicated 31
