ScruTo Istituto di Fisica dell' Universith - Torino (ricevuto il 28 Maggio 1966) Summary. -- Sum rules for the magnetic moments of baryons are obtained by using commutators of SU 3 generators with the electromagnetic current. The calculation is performed to first order in the medium-strong breaking of SU 3. The comparison of the results with the symmetry limit shows that SU 3 is a reasonably good symmetry group. The values of ~+ and A magnetic moments are in good agreement with experimental data. 1. - Introduction. The problem of the baryon octet magnetic moments can be investigated in the framework of SU3 current algebra, as has been already pointed out b y FURLA.N-LA~NOY-ROSSETTI-SEGR]~ (1). The advantage of this method lies in the possibility of calculating, besides the group-theoretical results, the corrections due to the appearance of non- vanishing matrix elements connecting different representations when the sym- metry is broken. The aim of the present paper is the evaluation of the cor- rection terms in the first order in the breaking parameter ], adapting to our needs the general covariant method proposed by ~BINI-FURLAN-:t~.OSS:ETTI (2). In the framework of the SU3 algebra of currents, we assume, as usual, the a x charges Q~(t) and the corresponding current densities J~(,t) to satisfy the (*) Supported in part by the U. S.
