SHARMA and Gian SINGH Department of Physics, University of Jammu, Jammu-180001 Received 12 April 1977 (Received 25 August 1977) Experimental results of the interactions of 400 GeV/c protons with emulsion nuclei are presented. It is observed that mean multiplicities for incoherent events are, C~V s) = 17.00 -+ 0.21, (Nh) = 8.10 -* 0.20. The dispersion D = 10.15 ± 0.19. Various linear rela- tions between these parameters are discussed. The energy dependence of (Ns>and the parameters Rem, Req and R 2 are also examined. It is observed that Rein varies asA 0"16. 1. Introduction In recent years various models have been suggested to explain the data on hadron- nucleon interactions at high energies [1,2]. These models in turn have been used to parametrize hadron-nucleus interactions at various energies. Although experimental data hitherto have seemed to favour certain models, the results are by no means conclusive. The currently available data comes from studies of p-nucleus interactions up to 300 GeV/c and from cosmic ray experiments. It was therefore considered use- ful to undertake an emulsion study of p-nucleus interactions at the highest available energy, the 400 GeV/c proton beam at FNAL. 61
