GEO-SMS: WEB MAPPING Ernieza Suhana Mokhtar, Nursyahani Nasron, Burhanuddin Ab Aziz, Nor Aizam Adnan Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Sureveying, Department of Surveying, Science and Geomatic, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Perlis KEY WORDS: Room Management, GIS Web-Based, JavaScript. ABSTRACT: Nowadays, the usage of space in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perlis is more crucial because of the increasing of student admission. Finding the lecture or examination rooms is one of the problems facing by students, especially at an early semester admission. This is because the classroom is scattered surrounding UiTM Perlis. Currently, the management of the room space for the lecture and examination purposes is recorded on pieces of paper. The aim of this work is to develop a system, Geospatial-Space Management System (Geo-SMS) that will assist students in identifying the lecture room. The objectives of this study are i) to establish the spatial and database of classroom and ii) to publish the dynamic map through the UiTM intranet. The system was supported by JavaScript to embed the GIS maps and tasks in the web applications. The Geo-SMS is published through the ArcGIS Server, web-based software provided in FSPU Geomatics laboratory, and it offers fast and easy access to the space information to the users. 1. INTRODUCTION Room space management is a multi-disciplinary activity in developing and managing the environment that affects the people and places of work. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a current technology that has many practical uses for room space management where it can visualize, emergency and disaster planning and response, as well as many other applications. Furthermore, information technology that provides by the GIS also possible to facilitate user, either for students or staff in finding the location and information of the lecture room. The space managements for institutions of higher learning are very critical and therefore, space and facilities management have to be the main agenda and need to be managed efficiently (Ihfasuziella Ibrahim, Wan Zahari Wan Yusoff and Noor Sharipah Sultan Sidi, 2011). Space management is recognized as one of the effective tools to help assist management of UiTM Perlis to identify and planning for each building space management more systematically. In this study, Geo-SMS was developed using ArcGIS server where it provides building space information together with the map of UiTM (Perlis). 2. RELATED WORKS Space management is very important for all organizations, especially for higher education institution (Ihfasuziella Ibrahim, Wan Zahari Wan Yusoff and Noor Sharipah Sultan Sidi, 2011). The study claimed that the space is not optimized by the university, especially during learning session and semester break. Upon an organization has lots of space, staff often face problems in managing the space according to current needs such as the arrangement space for upcoming learning session. Previously, time table has generated by a system which provided course and room information and distribute to user on paper. The problem occur when staff or student who unfamiliar with the location of class or need to find vacant class for academic activity purposes. Based on study by Zhito Su (2003), working coordination and exchange information are important in planning and managing space. Although the space has managing by computirize but the reports are mostly dispersely on paper. Beside that, fail in managing space according to current need can lead to availability of unusage space such as vacant lecturer's room. This scenario occur due non-updated information because of the displacement of lecturers or further education lecturers. This can viewed in the study by Jingfeng Xia (2004), based on study case library space, where space designed initially failed to follow current dynamic changes and lead to restructuring of space based on operational situation. The failure in managing also effect to the management cost such as electricity, mechanical and other related cost. The discussion from the finding of several reseacher (Ihfasuziella Ibrahim, Wan Zahari Wan Yusoff and Noor Sharipah Sultan Sidi, 2011), there is wasted space in the classroom where the space for learning was not consistent with the number of students. When the students only occupy half of classrom, this contribute the waste space which indirectly wastage of electric. To solve the problems, GIS is appropriate to be used as one of the effective system in handling the space. Several researchers (Yasser, 2004; Tadele, 2013; Zainuddin, Mokhtar and Yusof, 2011; Roziah, 2006) managing the facilities using GIS as part of the project implementation. In the study by Yasser (2004), SmartMAP was developed by integrating the GIS functions to visualize and the floor of the buildings. The system allowed users to browse the
