Remote Teambuilding: Leadership Theory on Virtual Management 1 1.0. Introduction The use of information and communications technology (ICT), a multi-cultural workforce and changing organizational models increase competitive advantage and worker participation in the nature of multinational corporations. One organizational model that was significant in combining best expertise on any given tasks regardless of geographical location is global virtual teams. Global virtual teams are defined as “internationally distributed groups of people with an organizational mandate to make or implement decisions with international components and implications”. (Maznevski & Chudoba, 2005) This reflects that virtual teams are members located in different parts of the world and their connection is virtual via information and communications technology. Today’s complex business world requires project teams that are flexible, dynamic and can creatively work towards an established objectives in the changing environment where globalization is constantly increasing. As more projects are being dispersed in different geographical locations and domestic projects being more composed of team members coming from various backgrounds and locations, the challenge for virtual leaders is to create a multi-cultural workforce that involve global virtual teams to balance diversity challenges between workers belonging to high individualistic cultures (who prefer to work independently) and high collectivist cultures (who prefer to follow with groups of the same shared beliefs and procedures). Existing studies highlight the primary challenge of virtual leaders as in shown in the decline of virtual team performance resulting from high diversity and lack of face-to-face interactions (Dennis & Meola, 2013) Thus, a need for activities that establishes trust, promotes engagement and synergy should be executed in the virtual environment to address the challenge on cultural diversity. This paper introduces “remote teambuilding” which proposes that (1) e-leaders who take account diversity in virtual teams through the use of the right user-friendly technology for team-building activities enhance closeness between diversified team members and convert diversity-related challenges into opportunities that create organizational value and opportunities, and (2) teambuilding activities should not just be done for teams within tangible boundaries of the organization, but are especially needed in a virtual environment where members are more highly diverse than that of teams belonging in one physical location. This theory examines information and communications technology (ICT) not just a
