STEENO Summary: In our study the mean age of the age at first ejaculation in Belgium is zy 13 yrs 2 mos, corresponding with a testicular volume of 10 zyxw ml with the orchidometer of Prader. These data are in agreement with those of Laron et al. (1980) and Richardson and Short (1978). The relationship between the age at first ejaculation and the testicular volume means that once this testicular volume (10 ml) has been reached, the question about the presence of ejaculations no longer need be posed “prematurely” (and becomes the possi- ble cause of feelings of inferiority). The age at first ejaculation certainly zyx can be used zy as an index of genital and sexual maturation in male puberty. Oigarche: Das Alter der ersten Ejakulation Zusammenfassung: In einer Studie bei 748 Schiilern im Alter von 10-20 Jahren wurde der Frage nachgegangen, zu welchem Zeitpunkt (in Jahren) die erste Ejakulation eingetre- ten war. Es wird festgestellt, daf3 im Mittel dieses Ereignis von dem untersuchten Perso- nenkreis mit 13,2 Jahren angegeben wird, wobei das Hodenvolumen (Prader-Orchidome- ter) mit 10 ml gemessen wurde. Diese Daten stehen in ubereinstimmung mit den Angaben von Laron et al. (1980) sowie Richardson u. Short (1978). Die Beziehung zwischen dem Alter der ersten Ejakulation und dem Hodenvolumen bedeutet, daf3 wenn dieses Hoden- volumen (10 ml) einmal erreicht ist, die Frage des Eintritts der ersten Ejakulationen nicht mehr mit dem Begriff ,,praematur“ bedacht werden kann, zumal diese Bezeichnung mog- licherweise die Ursache fiir Mindenvertigkeitskomplexe sein kann. Das Alter der ersten Ejakulation kann sicherlich als ein Index fur die genitale und sexuelle Reife in der mhnli- chen Pubertat benutzt werden. Introduction Testicular volume begins to increase between 9 and 11 years of age. The maximal growth velocity is situated between 12.5 and 13 years of age in Denmark (Andersen - 1968), whereas in Switzerland it occurs between 13.5 and 14 years (Zachmann et al. - 1974). The testicular volume ist better correlated with the chronological than with the skeletal age (Andersen - 1968). * The term “oigarche” for the age at first ejaculation was found in the work of J.C. Van Wieringen et al. (1971). Oigarche means the staring of semen. . . first ejaculation; Oigarche is to derive from the greek language: zyxwvutsr dpxd = beginning and zyxwvuts oljuupc., zyxwvutsr oijw = flow. (C.S.)
