DISCOVERY - LIFE OF PI Physical QUOTE / EVENT / IDEA TYPE OF DISCOVERY Algae and Meerkat Island “I preferred to set off and perish in search of my own kind than to live a lonely half-life of physical comfort and spiritual death.” Pi’s inially had a sense of relief when he comes to discover this Island. The island provided food, fresh water and relave safety. The island being carnivorous at night is symbolic of Pi’s sudden discovery that although he can survive on the island it will eat his humanity, enhanced by the tooth. The island, its’ aloneness will consume him, as food and water are not enough to sustain life. Human beings need the company of their own kind. By finding the tooth, it enables him to speculate about future possibilies and triggers his curiosity about his life journey, whether he should sele his life and die on the island or connue his journey and hope to live his life. This also led to personal discovery where Pi is confronted by exceponal circumstances which cause him to rethink his life. This discovery is also intensely meaningful as Pi discovers that in life one must be willing to take risk in order to have a chance to succeed. Material values Aſter being stuck in the middle of the ocean trying to survive with the tools and the materials he had at hand, later Pi realises, “I never thought a small piece of shade could bring me so much happiness. That a pile of tools, a bucket, a knife, a pencil, might be my greatest treasures. Or that knowing that Richard Parker was here might ever bring me peace.” The responder is encouraged to queson the importance of material wealth in the modern consumer world. Resource of the natural world Pi discovers his resourcefulness, resilience and physical endurance as he connects with the natural would and discovers it abundance and ability to sustain him in the most challenging circumstances. This discovery leads Pi to perceived mother nature as a helper not a threat. Pi learnt about self The raſt becomes Pi’s temporary home. It is here that he discovers talents he did not know he had. The destrucon of it is a lesson in life of what humanity builds so life and fate will eventually take away. it also highlights the power of nature. Flying fish scene The flying fish sequence I one of the most spectacular scenes in the film and becomes a clash of wills between Pi and Richard Parker – and Pi discovers he has the strength to win. Swimming in the fresh water This connues the water theme that runs throughout the film – note too this film uses downward looking shots quiet oſten to show the vulnerability of the persona. The island is found as if by some miracle and it is a new world of discovery – a world of green and shadows and the meerkats community stuns – both Pi and Richard Parker – they are saved by food and water. He has found some inner peace and many of the issues that confronted him in his youth, parcularly in regard to religious belief have been resolved. However, he remains polytheisc. Pi’s self- discovery is mul-faceted – emoonal, spiritual, physical and creave, and it reflects how curiosity for life has set him on the path to find his place in the world. Pi discovers his place in God’s creaon s one of the many creatures that inhabit the Earth. Richard Parker Pi learns not to romancise the ger, Richard Parker in a very unforgeable way by his father who emphasises the true difference to him between wild animals and humans. It is a painful provocave discovery for Pi and a lesson that he does not truly learn at this point. The island was not what it seemed – the water turned into acid at night. A
