Admitted in Child Psychiatry Ward of A Tertiary Care
Psychiatric Hospital: A Retrospective Chart Review *

Abstract
Aim: To study the socio-demographic and clinical profile of patients, who were
admitted to child and adolescent psychiatric ward of a tertiary care centre over a
1 year period.
Method: The medical records of all patients admitted to the child ward over a
period of 1 year were included in the study and analyzed for socio-demographic
and clinical details.
Result: The proportion of male to female patients admitted was almost equal
(1.09:1). The commonest diagnosis was Mental Retardation (n=24; 26.6%). The
Second most common diagnosis was Unspecified Non-organic Psychosis
(n=10; 11.1%), followed by Bipolar Affective Disorder and Dissociative
(Conversion) Disorder (n=8; 8.8%) and Catatonia (n=7, 7.7%). The commonest
co-morbid disorder was Epilepsy. Approximately 16% of the patients diagnosed
with Mental Retardation had Epilepsy.
Conclusion: There is need to generate models of treatment, care and liaison
with general physicians, pediatricians, and welfare agencies to bring about
effective utilization of resources and to plan out child psychiatric services for
the region.
