INTRODUCTION
You hold in your hands the first issue of the launch
volume of Global Strategy Journal, the newest
member of the Strategic Management Society/Wiley
family of journals. You might well be wondering just
why GSJ has been launched now and even more
whether you should invest your time and effort into
reading it and—we hope—publishing in it. We are
convinced that you should do both. To help encour-
age you, the reader, this short essay introduces the
concept, vision, and scope of the journal and then
introduces the themes and key research questions
scrutinized in the issue. We also want you to know
that this is the first of two double issues, each with
four major themes, in the first volume of GSJ. These
issues, along with a single issue (the first in Volume
Two) comprise the launch volume. All of these
papers were presented and critiqued at a launch con-
ference in July 2010, all of the authors and commen-
tators are equally skilled and distinguished, and we
expect all of the articles to be equally worthy of your
attention. Selection to each of the issues was tied first
to readiness for publication and second to our sense
that each volume should be somewhat eclectic in
terms of its level of analysis, mix of empirical and
theoretical, and subtopic focus. You can’t just look at
the first issue—articles in subsequent issues also
promise to have great impact on the field. Just
wait. . .
What is Global Strategy Journal?
Global strategy is strategy with a comprehensive
worldwide perspective. Its worldwide focus implies
that an important aspect of global strategy is that it
recognizes the importance of place, boundaries, and
distance to the process of seeking competitive
advantage. Its comprehensive, or integrated, nature
suggests that it is about organizing and managing
strategically to deliver world-class value, based on
firm-specific resources and capabilities sourced from
the most productive locations, to customers in the
most rewarding markets, wherever they might be.
Global strategy is inherently dynamic because its
context encompasses wide variety and constant
change from basic inputs to organizational processes
and customer demands. Global Strategy Journal
offers a home to research that seeks to understand
the makeup, outcomes, and boundaries of global
strategy.
As described in its Web page, GSJ will offer an
outlet for research that addresses any or all aspects of
the environment, institutions, systems, organiza-
tions, resources, individuals, actions, and decisions
that are a part of or influence the practice or study of
strategic management in the global context. Global
means many things to many people, but in this
