Turkish Studies - International Periodical For The Languages, Literature and History of Turkish or Turkic Volume 8/12 Fall 2013, p. 1043-1065, ANKARA-TURKEY TRANSFORMATION OF GALLIPOLI BASED ADMINISTRATIVE GEOGRAPHY FROM OTTOMAN EMPIRE TO TODAY * Selver ÖZÖZEN KAHRAMAN ** ABSTRACT In this study, spatial and administrative change of Gallipoli, which has been an important settlement and administrational center throughout history, and its connected populated areas as administrative units after they were captured by the Ottoman Empire, were analyzed. The study period is in two parts: from the XIV. century to the Republican period and from the early Republican period to the present. Historical and geographical resources related to Gallipoli were reviewed and the changes to the administrative geography of Gallipoli were endeavored to be revealed along with their reasons. One of the most significant settlement areas in the peninsula during the Ottoman Empire, Gallipoli was of vital importance to the naval policy of the Ottoman Empire. Gallipoli served as a central district to Rumelia and Kaptan Pasa counties and Edirne Province respectively, it became a county for a short period in the Republican period. It reached its maximum size under Ottoman control, regressed to its current boundaries in the Republican period and became a district. Gallipoli port was advantageous in terms of both import and export. But Gallipoli started to lose its power of challenge against the other port cities from the XIX. century. Also, its older importance concerning defence strategy declined. Gallipoli is currently a district surviving detached from the center to which it is connected. In that study, the settlement changes connected with Gallipoli, namely, the changes in borders ruled from Gallipoli were researched. The jeopolitical, economic and strategical factors having roles in the change of the administrative geography of Gallipoli.
