The role of co-text There are different kinds of context : Linguisc context=co-text 1. Co-text: Is a set of words used in the same phrase or sentence. Is the linguisc environment in which a word is used within a text. Context: Is more general informaon It could include addional informaon about the nature of the text, the period wrien, ficon non-ficon, the age and the naonality of the writer Context refers to informaon out side of the text available for the reader through understanding . 2. Our ability to idenfy the intended referents depend not only on our understanding of the referring expression but it is also aided by linguisc material, or co-text accompanying the referring expression. Example: look, look aſter, look for. 3. Without the co-text i.e. the linguisc material we could not get the exact meaning. In pragmacs it is all about meaning and to be able to understand as a listener what the speaker is referring to, you need some addions. Example: if a speaker says "the teacher", the hearer will have many mental representaons in order to understand the uerance. But to simplify the process the speaker adds " the grammar teacher" . 4. The co-text clearly limits our range of possible interpretaons we might have for a word Eg: Brazil wins World cup.
