2016 3rd Intenational Conference on Advanced Computing and Communication Systems lCACCS -2016), Jn. 22 & 23, 2016, Coimbatore, INDIA A Multilingual Ontology for Tamil Literary Works Ravi Lourdusamy Associate Professor Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur Vellore, Tamilnadu, India raviatshc@yahoo.com Abstract- Ontology plays a vital role in teaching and learning. In the last decade most of the learning sites were trying to adopt semantic web techniques to develop the learning materials. It is easy to visualize the concepts that are developed in ontology in an effective manner. In this article a multilingual ontology is developed to teach Tamil literary, Thirukkural by espousing the features of ontology. It is one of the famous Tamil literary in the world and has been translated into more than 80 languages. Three ontologies are developed for Thirukkural in Tamil, English and Hindi languages and they are merged into a single ontology. The relationships between the classes are established by mapping the ontologies. Keywords- Multilingual ontoloy; Ontoloy merging; Ontoloy mapping I. INTRODUCTION Ontology is a "formal, explicit speciication of a shared conceptualization"[I]. It is used to store the content in a machine readable manner which persuade to develop the emerging Leaning Management Systems(LMS). The leaning ontology which is developed for the educational domain contains the knowledge for developing intelligent leaning infonnation system. The learning ontology is a domain ontology that describes the learning tenns and relationship between them and provides a clear description of these tenns[2]. Nowadays most of the leaning resources are being converted into digital format and open source which are designed and developed in an interactive manner. E-Leaning is a process which uses the electronic format of the leaning contents that can be accessible by anybody. The knowledge based text retrieval is used to implement the E Leaning systems effective and eficient. Ontology applications are used to perform the semantic based text retrieval. These applications pursue the following methodologies to develop ontology for leaning system. 1) Identiy the pupose to develop the ontology, 2) ontology capture mechanism, 3) coding the ontology, 4) reinement, 5) testing and 6) maintenance. In this article, a multilingual ontology is implemented for leaning Thirukkural, the famous Tamil literary work. The multilingual ontology for Thirukkural is developed in Tamil, English and Hindi. This literary work is classiied into three Merlin Florrence Joseph Ph.D Research Scholar Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur Vellore, Tamilnadu, India merlinlorrence@gmail.com sections, 133 chapters and consists 1330 verses. The classiications are properly structured in ontology to understand this literary easily. The article also describes the methods to develop the multilingual ontology application. Further the article is organized as follows. Section 2 presents the research works caried on multilingual ontology applications in education domain. In section 3 the methods and the process low of developing multilingual ontology are elaborated. The features of the proposed multilingual ontology application are nrrated in section 4. The conclusion is proposed in section 5. II. RELATED WORKS Multilingual ontology applications for the various education domains are described in this section. Kanellopoulos and collegues have proposed a methodology to develop ontology based leaning applications[3]. This methodology has six steps as follows: 1) identiy the purpose, 2) ontology capture, 3) coding, 4) reinement, 5) testing and 6) maintenance. The role of semantic web for leaning system is discussed in this research work. Also the number of ontology based intelligent leaning infonnation systems are described. Wang and collegues have developed a ontology based ecosystem model[4]. The leaner model speciication established by the Committee of Chinese education information technology standards is analyzed and the ecological system has been developed based on those standards. On the basis of Anderson's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, e-Ieaning ecosystem model is designed. The use of e-Iearning ecological ontology in modem distance education ecosystem is focused. Theoretical support for the building of e-Iearning ecosystem, and the technical guidance for the design of e-Iearning ecosystem are elaborated. Baenaru and collegues have proposed a model for ontology based e-Ieaning system for healthcare human resources management (HHRM)[5]. An effective method has been proposed to improve the leaning system by providing personalized leaning paths. It is created using ontology and advanced educational strategies to provide a personalized
