Mechanical and neurohumoral stimuli, among others, have an independent effect. Materials and methods: The geometric and functional structural changes of the left ventricle that affect the cardiovascular prognosis of chronic renal disease and end-stage renal disease are reviewed. Results: Dialysis does not completely revert the cardiac alterations. Treatment of variables such as hypertension or anemia may cause a favorable impact but they are not always effective. Vitamin D deficiency, hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism may be involved in the cardiac damage. Conclusion: New research on these variables could help to explain the development of struc- tural and functional development of the ventricular myocardium, improving the strategies to prevent it. © 2012 SEHLELHA.
