During lactation, health workers are the most reliable source of information by parents. The role of an advisory birth attendants significantly affect breastfeeding in the first day of the birth of the baby and the support of health professionals has a significant influence on the duration of breastfeeding. This achievement is still far from the target of the Indonesian government which define at least 80% of mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies, namely breast milk without any other food or beverage from birth until the baby is 6 months old. The Government in 2012 has designed programs Action Plan Acceleration Exclusive Breastfeeding 2012-2014 which aims to accelerate the achievement of the scope of exclusive breastfeeding (0-6 months) from 61.5% in 2010 to 80% in 2014. Based on data from the profiles Kudus district health offices, known exclusive breast milk coverage reached 26.4% and this is below the target of national coverage of 80%. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the characteristics (age, education, work and residence time) and motivation by the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding by midwives in the region of the Kudus district health centers. The method used in this study using observational analytic design with cross sectional approach. This research method is used to solve and answer the problems that exist now and to examine the relationship of one variable to another variable that is indicated by the magnitude of the correlation coefficient. The results showed that there was no relationship between age, education, length of service and residence with the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding but there is a relationship between the midwife motivation with the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding. Thus it can be recommended for health centers in order to increase the motivation of midwives in the attainment of exclusive breastfeeding by training / refreshing return, and supervision can give rewards to midwives who are able to achieve coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in accordance with the target.
