1. INTRODUCTION
Communication is the act of interaction that connects people since the beginning of humanity because of their needs for
basic needs, living and being together; and it enables them to live in harmony as a society. Communication enables human
beings to establish healthy relationships with other people, and to strengthen these relationships using some feelings and
thoughts in accordance with common purposes. In this context, a healthy education process necessitates a healthy
communication process and this situation increases the importance of this process.
Every human being perceives and interprets communication in different ways (Hall, 1977). Human beings develop,
mature, expand their worlds; increase their knowledge, manners, experience in the communication process. They become a
part of a society that communicates with each other; and maintains their existence. In short, communication is necessary for
human beings as air, water, nutrition (Kiral and Figen, 2007).
The word “communication” derives from the Latin words “communis” which means common, and “communicare” which
means “making common” (Guclu, 2007:193). In other words, communication can be defined as the process of making the same
meaning common among two or more individuals. The main purpose here is sharing feelings, thoughts, knowledge and skills
(Ozerbas, 2007).
Communication requires not only the delivering of meanings, but also their being understood (Robbins,1991:141).
Namely, communication is a multi-directional phenomenon that involves the exchange of messages or thoughts, feelings or
knowledge via verbal or non-verbal mediums (Margaret et al, 2010). Establishing better relationships with other people
increases self-respect and helps developing social relationships (Caputo, Harry and Colleen, 1994:5). In other words, the
purpose of communication is conveying knowledge to each other or to others (Vckers,2006).
Lasswell states that the most convenient way to define the act of communication is seeking answers to these questions.
“Who says what to whom in what channel with what effect?”. According to Lasswell, communication is a linear one-way process.
Namely, the message from the communicator reaches to the audience through a medium and thus the message causes a
change in the audience. Therefore, communication is considered as a process of persuasion in principle. In addition, Lasswell
assumes that messages are always effective. Message is sent from the resource, reaches to the target through medium and
consequently causes change (Tekinalp S, Uzun R, 2006.)
Lunenburg and Ornstein (Lunenburg, Ornstein,1991) emphasize that in order to realize an effective communication,
overcome communication barriers and strengthen mutual understanding, both trainers and players need to pay lasting efforts.
Besides, they state that the communication within teams should be developed in order to overcome communication barriers,
and for this having the skills of repetition, empathy, understanding, feedback and listening is of importance. It is pretty hard to
establish successful relationships without communication in today's society and organizational life. For this reason, effective
communication is of utmost importance to be successful in both individual and professional lives; and it is also necessary for
managing people groups (Singer,1990).
Communication is very important for players in both individual and especially team sports. Two-way and peer to peer
communication among trainer, player and players is a factor that affects success in a positive way both in terms of motivation
and evaluating the state of players better.
As a means of education, sports is movements, games and competitions that form the characters of human beings. For
all of the elements, the purpose is not only having rest or entertainment, but also social interaction. Above all, sports motivates
individuals for a couple of ideals. It helps obtaining the results for something that is wanted to be done as soon as possible. It
makes masses familiar to each other. It is the means of propaganda for countries (Savas I, 1993; 32).
In accordance with these information, the purpose of the present research is; examining the communication skill levels
of students who participate in Turkey Inter-university Wrestling Competition and study at Schools of Physical Education and
