Albert Arnavat Docente Investigador de la Universidad Técnica del Norte aarnavat@utn.edu.ec RESUMEN La Historia de la fotografía, desde sus orígenes públicos en París en 1839, es un aspecto de máximo interés en los estudios realizados por los profesionales de la historia y la comunicación visual, pues las imágenes captadas por una cámara son una fuente de información de primer orden. Pero para analizar correctamente una fotografía es necesario conocer previamente la evolución del arte fotográico. Este artículo es una apretada síntesis del desarrollo de la fotografía antigua desde sus orígenes en la ciudad de Reus, la segunda de Cataluña en población y economía en el siglo XIX, con unos 30.000 habitantes y un desarrollado entramado industrial y comercial. Desde las primeras fotografías documentadas en la ciudad, en 1845 realizadas por una daguerrotipista ambulante francesa, se hace un recorrido por los fotógrafos y los comercios de fotografía reusenses hasta 1903, año en que se celebra un Concurso Nacional de Fotografía, que junto con la apertura del establecimiento Fotografía Artística Esteve Puig, marcan el inicio de una nueva época en la fotografía local. También se destaca la relación fotografía y pintura, todo ello en un intento de conciliar la historia general con la local. Se sacan del olvido más de veinte fotógrafos populares que sin la más mínima pretenciosidad supieron plasmar la imagen de las gentes y el paisaje urbano en aquellos años. In order to analyze a photograph correctly, it is necessary to know beforehand the evolution of the photographic art. his article is a close synthesis of the development of old photography since its origins in the city of Reus, the second one of Catalonia in population and economy in the nineteenth century, with about 30,000 inhabitants and a developed industrial and commercial framework. From the irst photographs documented in the city, in 1845 taken by a daguerreotype traveling French woman, a tour of photographers and photographic shops of Reus was done until 1903, the year in which a National Photography Contest is celebrated, and together with the opening of the establishment of Art Photography Esteve Puig, they mark the beginning of a new era in local photography. It also highlights the relationship between photography and painting, all in an attempt to reconcile the general and local history. More than twenty popular photographers are brought to light who without any pretentiousness managed to capture the image of the people and the urban landscape in those years.
