YOUNG, zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedc II PREFACE THIS is a continuation of previous annual reviews published in the Journal of Chronic Diseases, (October 1959; July 1960; July 1961; May 1962; June 1963). The first three years’ reviews are also available in the form of a monograph, Medical Genetics 1958-1960, (C. V. Mosby Co., St. Louis, MO., 1961). Reviews for the three years completed with this one will also be available as a monograph entitled Medical Genetics 1961-1963 to be published shortly by Pergamon Press, the present publishers of the Journal of Chronic Diseases. The reviews of the first three years, referred to as Series I, had individual topics numbered consecutively from 1 through 950. Series II, beginning with “Medical Genetics 1961”, started the numbering again at 1 and had items numbered 1 through 436. The review for 1962 had topics numbered 437 through 794. The present review (for 1963) is numbered 795 through 1131. When reference is made to subjects in the first series (Medical Genetics 19.58-1960) the number is prefixed by I, e.g. I q39. When reference is made to subjects in the present series the number is given without prefix, e.g. 7139. The availability of Excerpta Medica abstracts in Human Genetics ((517) has altered to some extent the role of these annual reviews. No longer is it necessary to be so comprehensive in coverage as previously. To some extent the reviews beginning with this will be a collection of essays on various topics. The period covered will not necessarily be limited rigidly to the one calendar year. Articles pertinent to specific areas will be listed even though no specific discussion of the contents is provided. Although the role of these reviews is altered by the availability of the Excerpta Medica abstracts, they are not replaced. Collections of abstracts distributed on a 1077
