A NEW INTELLIGENT RELIABLE ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY POWER UNIT FOR SUPER YACHTS Ali Ibraheem, Ibraheem Hamid, Mohamed Adel Marine Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, Egypt email: ali_alex_and@yahoo.com ABSTRACT The present paper proposes a new hybrid environmental friendly power unit that is especially suitable for multihull superyachts powering. The unit harvests solar/wind energy using a smart new scheme. The contributions of the new design that we propose may be summarized as follows. The first contribution is the special arrangement and positioning of the solar/wind harvesting systems. The second contribution is an adaptive anticipatory fuzzy logic controller which is responsible for optimal power unit parameters adjustment and power budget management. The merits of the proposed power demonstrated through a case study. We present the full details of applying the proposed power unit design principles to design the power plant for a "quadramaran" superyacht that we call Ganaremos. The analysis of this case study proves that the proposed power unit is reliable, cost-effective, acceptable in terms of size and weight as well as being environmental friendly. keywords: wind turbines, solar panels, fuzzy controllers, artificial neural networks (ANNs) I. INTRODUCTION The depletion of fossil fuels together with their negative effect on the environment has greatly motivated research in green power plants in general and ships in particular [1]-[2]. Pollution within the marine environment is difficult to control and overcome. Legislations are being added all the time to limit the allowed level of emitted pollutants. For pleasure yachts especially, there is the additional aesthetical aspect. The noise common with diesel engines and the pollutants emitted are totally unacceptable by customers of pleasure yachts. This makes a green power plant for those applications more and more attractive. However, green power plants suffer from the disadvantages of low power density, intermittent performance (lack of reliability) and high cost. This makes the design of a green power plant for super yachts challenging. Motivated by these arguments, the present paper proposes a new hybrid environmental friendly power unit that is especially suitable for multihull superyachts powering. The design follows the philosophy proposed by Fath-Allah et. al. [3]. As
