The concept of industrial heritage with regards to the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage, on the other hand, had become significantly important in countries such as England, Germany, and France after the 1960s, and concepts like “industrial heritage”, “industrial archeology”, “industrial culture”, and “industrial landscaping” had emerged. For a building or a group of buildings to become an industrial heritage, it is expected to acquire at least some of the values such as historical value, functional/utilizability value, environmental value (regional, urban, national, international scale), technical value, originality value (originality in terms of design, production technique, location, equipment and interior characteristics), cultural value, symbolic value, architectural/artistic value, rarity value, and significant with regards to industrial archeology [2]. Within the scope of this study, and in light of the values mentioned above, a building complex (Jahrhunderthalle) in Germany’s Ruhr Region known as an industrial heritage will be introduced as a symbol of historical permeability with regards to its original characteristics, and the evolvements it underwent during the process of re7functionalization. It is possible to construct the concept of historical permeability for all buildings and protected areas that require preservation other than industrial heritage, however, this essay focuses solely on industrial heritage and Jahrhunderthalle as a case study. 1 This study is published in Turkish in “Mimaran” Magazine Issue number 9, the official journal of the Konya Chamber of Architects.
