/SSN: 1012-9197 The Livelihood Pattern of Older Persons in Slum Area: A Study on Dhaka City Mohammad Mainuddin Mollah* Abstract The number of older person is increasing gradually due to the massive development of science and technology resulting in 'Gray Society' or 'Aged Society' in Bangladesh. The number of slum is also increasing due to rapid industrialization and urbanization making the city the worst place of living. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is regarded as one of the worst cities of living in the world and it is the 8 th populous city in the world. According to the urban specialists, the optimum population of Dhaka city in its 360 square kilometers of land area is 50-60 lac but at present, nearly two crore people live in Dhaka city. It has been found that about 3000 people enter in Dhaka city everyday for livelihood adding to this existing number. This influx of people to the capital has forced many low-income groups to live in slums. Experts say that about 65% of the total populations of Dhaka live in Slum. The number of older people as slum dwellers is increasing gradually in Dhaka and it is therefore, an issue of major concern for the social scientists. The older people are in worse condition in Bangladesh due to changing social pattern. But the older people who live in slums are in the worst situation. Their livelihood pattern is the most miserable of the urban community. This research based article mainly is an attempt to explore the livelihood patterns of older people in slum areas of Dhaka City with special emphasis on their demographic and socio-economic condition and their various problems (physical, social, and psychological).
