As the branch of anthropology dedicated to the study of cultural diversity, cultural anthropology’s primary goal is to understand social differences (whether cultural, ethnic, “racial,” gender, sexual, class, or religious) and their relationship to political, economic, linguistic, historical, and other social realms. This course introduces the students to the key ideas and major thinkers of this discipline. It examines the different aspects of cultural diversity and allows the students to better understand the complexity of social phenomena. It also introduces students to the most important concepts and approaches used by anthropologists in understanding socio-cultural variation. At the end of the course, students are expected to learn about different cultures and to apply their knowledge to make sense of their own society.
