Prof. Dr. Reşid Rahmeti Arat, 15 Mayıs 1900 tarihinde Tatarların tarihî merkezi Kazan yakınlarında bir köyde doğmuştur; öğrencilik yılları Rusya’nın çeşitli yerlerinde geçen ve Sovyet Devrimi sırasında cephelerde savrulup Mançurya’ya kadar uzanan kariyerini 22 yaşında Berlin’e giderek tamamen değiştirmiştir. 1923 yazında Berlin Üniversitesi Felsefe Fakültesinde okumaya başlayan genç Reşid Rahmeti, ilkin meşhur Türkolog Prof. Willi- Bang’ın öğrencisi, sonra da Anne Marie von Gabain ile birlikte asistanı olarak, Türkistan- Turfan’dan getirilen eski Uygur yazmaları üstünde çalışarak Eski Türkçenin dünya bilim çevrelerinde en tanınmış uzmanlarından biri haline gelmiştir. 1933’de İstanbul Üniversitesine katılan ve 1958’te Ordinarius olan Prof. Dr. Reşid Rahmeti Arat Türkiye’de tarihî- karşılaştırmalı Türk filoloji çalışmaları alanın kurucusu ve en çalışkan emekçisidir. Professor Dr. Reşid Rahmeti Arat was born in a village near the historical center of Kazan Tatars in Fifteenth May, 1900. His student years have passed in various parts of Russia. But he has changed his drifting career on the battle fronts from during the Soviet Revolution to the Manchuria by going to the Berlin. In the summer of 1923, young Reşid Rahmeti began to study in University of Berlin, Faculty of Philosophy. First, he began working as a student with the famous turcologist Prof. Willi-Bang and then he became an asisstant of Anne Marie von Gabain. In this way, he could work on Writing of Uygur from Turkestan, Turfan. , he has become one of the most well-known expert on the world scientific community. In 1933 he joined the University of Istanbul and he became the Ordinarius Professor in 1958. Prof. Arat is the founder and the most hardworking laborer in the history of comparative philology in Turkey.
