This year included several publications that honour prominent scholars in our field, and I begin with those. Studies in Victorian and Modern Literature: A Tribute to John Sutherland, edited by William Baker, is a Festschrift in honour of John Sutherland. The volume includes twenty-six essays that cover a remarkable range of topics modelled after Sutherland’s intellectual interests and attempt to capture his intellectual spirit. Baker’s introduction traces the trajectory of Sutherland’s career, highlighting key works and their effect on Victorian studies. Baker also contributed chapter 24, ‘John Sutherland: A Life’, which offers an account of the major events in Sutherland’s life and ends with Baker’s memories of Sutherland. The following chapter titles, their content, and their style are meant to reflect and honour John Sutherland’s provocative questions, compelling prose, and important contributions to the field. Reading the essays in this volume will make one want to run to the archives to explore further the fresh names and works held out to tantalize our intellectual curiosity, and to pull our well-worn favourite Victorian texts from the shelf to examine them again. In short, these essays provide just the sort of provocative readings one experiences when reading Sutherland’s own work. The Year’s Work in English Studies (2017) ß The Author 2017.
