1 Joby John Roll No.17073 Prof. Kuruvilla Pandikattu Introduction to Metaphysics October 2017 The Problem of Human Values: A Study in Transhumanism The questsions of metaphysics always deal with the ‘Why’ aspect of every phenomena. This ‘why’ aspect gives an opening to the religion to give interpretations of metaphysical matters, where human existence and its teleological aspects are discussed. Theories in humanism give focus to human welfare and dignity and those theories are optimistic about the power of the human reason. Human beings use the faculty of reasoning to upgrade himself in the process of evolution. The human species has survived in the nature only because of its timely adaptation to the changes of nature by inventing new technologies. There arise many problems with regard to Human Values in the twenty first century, the age of Artificial Intelligence. This academic paper studies the problem of human values in Transhumanism. Transhumanism has become the future of the next phase of human evolution. The transhumanist claim that they can transcend mortality by using Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Amplification. Andrew Griffin, a reporter in The Times of India has reported recently that Anthony Levandowski - the man who built Google Self-Driving car- sets up ‘Church’ for Artificial Intelligence where robots are the new gods. He also reports that a range of scientific billionaires, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have warned that our relaxed attitude towards AI could mean we are at the risk of being killed by it 1 . The invention of computers and the development of technology leads the present generation to step into the next phase of evolution where transplantable mechanical organs of the body guarentees immortality to human species. The scientific machines powered by artificial intelligence in a way substitutes human actions and eve the philosophy that they have. The researches in the field of Nanotechnology,Biotechnology, Information Technology and Neuro Science will empower the human to transform itself from human to Transhuman beings where one can improve oneself through genetic editing, transplantation of natural organs with replaceable mechanical organs and so on. What we are somehow decided with what we possess and not (ie our memories and formulation of new ideas through its association). If our entire memories can be stored in a machine powered with Artificial Intelligence, that will be our immortal rebirth through which the religious dictums and human moral values can be questioned. Even though human values’ nature is relative the entire humanity shares a common ground with regard to the basic values of life.
