Özakça 3 ABSTRACT The study of bridges in general and composite box girder bridges in particular, requires considerably more information than is contained in codes. A sound understanding of bridge behavior at all stages of loading is essential. Analysis and design of composite box girder bridges is complicated by many factors including composite interaction between the concrete deck and steel girder, local buckling of the thin steel walls making up the box, torsional warping, interaction between different kinds of cross-sectional forces, and the effect of horizontal bridge curvature on both local and global behavior. The aim of this article is to present a detailed description and explanation of the behavior of composite box girder bridge at several types of loading and under variety conditions. The present research addresses comparison using solid and shell element models of the composite box girder bridge. This task involves examining the stress patterns obtained using static three-dimensional finite element modeling. Comparisons made between stresses obtained for the composite box girder bridges according to many changes in the dimensions of the bridge. In the current study, composite boxes girder bridges analyzed with solid and shell elements using three dimensional finite element analyses and their behavior is investigated. Finally, the parametric investigations are performed on the composite box girder model to evaluate the effects of several important parameters on the behavior of the girder.
