Japanese Cultural Impact in Taiwanese Everyday Life Abstract The purpose of this work is to study how and why Japanese style of everyday life influences on the modern Taiwanese society. The author sees the modern Taiwanese society as a multicultural one with many other cultural influences, which were brought to Taiwan in different periods of its history by bearers of various civilizations — prehistorical Austronesian languages speaking societies, Chinese migrants, Hollanders, Spaniards, and Japanese colonizers, Russian immigrants, American soldiers and businessmen. This work analyzes the influence of Japanese everyday life culture on Taiwan society in the field of consumers market. The main subject of the investigation is Japanese and Japanese-style shops in Taiwan, such as supermarkets and 100-yen shops. It is studied here also the diversity of popular Japanese products in Taiwan market and their consumers. The general consumers of Japanese products in Taiwan are people of younger generation (mostly females) in the age between 18 and 40. The explanation of the phenomenon is that during the past 10-15 years Taiwan’s customers were deeply influenced by Japanese television dramas and variety shows. After that the consumer market in Taiwan has gradually changed its orientation away from American influence toward Japanese. Another reason is that many young Taiwanese used already make regular shopping trips to Japan.
