Abstract Together ǁith progress iŶ ĐoŵŵuŶiĐatioŶ teĐhŶologies, ŵedia is takiŶg ŵore part iŶ people’s dailLJ liǀes, plaLJiŶg a key role in forming ideas and behaviours. Having it within his life, the individual gets more affected by media ďoth iŶ positiǀe aŶd Ŷegatiǀe ǁaLJs. It’s oďserǀed that espeĐiallLJ the ĐhildreŶ, haǀiŶg less edžperieŶĐe aŶd information on real life are much more affected by negative content of media. In this context; raising awareness and creating critical thinking from early periods in order to help an individual have vantage against media is becoming a current issue. Perquisite of these skills, considered as a necessity for democratic perception is the education of media literacy. As defined in the most general sense, the skills such as reach of media messages, considering, analysing and re-creation of media message, media literacy is a new study for Turkey even though it edžisted iŶ ǀarious ĐouŶtries’ ĐurriĐuluŵs siŶĐe oǀer a ĐeŶturLJ. As ŵedia eduĐatioŶ is Ŷeǁ iŶ TurkeLJ, it ďriŶgs a number of problems with it due to application of wrong policies. Thereby, this study aims to focus on problems occurring in media literacy and offer solutions for them. In the study carried out in Kayseri, 15 instructors in media literacy field were interviewed and problems in media education have been identified. According to the data collected, main problems of media literacy in Turkey are conservator approach of media literacy, having media teachers from different branches, lack of technical equipment and media education being an elective course.
