Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND This chapter contains the introduction of the study, objectives of the study, conceptual basis of the study, procedural framework of the study, statement of the problem, statement of the hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and delimitation and definition of terms which would help in the understanding of the concept of the paper on hand. Introduction For over the years, one of the major environmental problems in our country was dengue fever. Dengue is an ongoing public health concern in the Philippines. The epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever ever recorded in the world occurred in Manila in 1953. By the mid-1970’s, dengue fever had become a significant cause of hospitalization and death among children in the Philippines. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Philippines experienced the seventh highest number of dengue fever cases in the world between 2004 and 2010.The Philippines Department of Health Epidemiology Bureau has reported a 41% increase in cases of dengue fever in the country for January 2016 to the present compared with the same period in 2015. Some of the researchers found that mosquito repellent and insecticide can be a solution to prevent dengue. But there are some other ways to prevent dengue aside from mosquito repellent and insecticide and that is sanitizing all corners of the house and cleaning the possible place where mosquito can live like drainage, gutters, and canals. Because dengue is caused by a virus, there is no specific medicine or antibiotic to treat it, the only treatment is to treat the symptoms. For typical dengue, the treatment is purely concerned with relief of the symptoms. Rest and fluid intake for adequate hydration is important.
