However, in the subsequent times, education system suffered immensely due to wars and invasions by foreign rulers. It was after Independence that the Government of India brought in new policies from time to time to improve the beleaguered education system. Nonetheless, a lot still needs to be done to tackle the issues of providing quality education coupled with skill enhancement, and ensuring employability in the domestic and global markets today. This paper assesses the prevailing higher education scenario in India on the basis of the available data, and recommends reforms in this sector to nurture job providers rather than job seekers.
