Os moinhos” viria a ser tido nos anos 1980 como a primeira utilização impressa da expressão ‘arqueologia industrial’. Dois artigos franceses, também dos anos 80, poriam por seu lado em destaque um trabalho de 1879 do barão de Verneilh. Uma imersão em publicações francesas viria a revelar vários outros autores para além de Viterbo e Verneilh que usaram a expressão ‘arqueologia industrial’ nos seus artigos durante todo o século XIX, remontando o primeiro que conhecemos a 1842, i.e., há 175 anos precisamente. Palavras-chave: arqueologia industrial; França; história da arqueologia industrial; século XIX. ABSTRACT Published in 1896, Sousa Viterbo’s paper “Portuguese industrial archaeology. The mills” would come to be considered in the 1980s as the irst printed use of the term ‘industrial archaeology.’ Two French articles, also from the 1980s, would bring to light a 1879 essay by the baron of Vernheilh. This paper, however, has delved into French publications to reveal that several other authors besides Viterbo and Verneilh used the term ‘industrial archaeology’ in their papers all across the nineteenth century, its earliest occurrence harking back to 1842, that is, exactly 175 years ago.
