INDIAN JOURNAL OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS VOL. 43, NO. 1-2, JAN-DEC 2017 Illocution and Clause Type and the Role of Bangla Particle SIBANSU MUKHOPADHYAY Society for Natural Language Technology Research, Kolkata ABSTRACT Particle or what designated in many studies as discourse particle or modal particle interacts simultaneously with clause type and illocutionary force. This study at the outset distinguishes these two different projections usually assembled in ForceP. Secondly, this attempt points up the role of Bangla particle, which has the ability to alter the illocutionary force (according to the speakers’ intention) in an identical construction to result an alternative perlocutionary effect. The methodology used in the study is not convincingly formal, which in case of generative grammar theory focuses on typical syntagmatic relations between the objects. The viewpoint deployed in this occasion enables us to observe syntactic objects from both syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes. Thus apart from the formal as well as monoaxial observation, we depend on the biaxial assumptions. Keywords: Intention, illocutionary force, perlocutionary effect, particle, biaxial assumption 1. INTRODUCTION Linguists from different fields have been studying the role particles in many languages since last few decades. The explanations are drawn from different angles. Generativists also became interested in the study of particle in collaboration with pragmatics. Among such generativists who work for projecting pragmatic as well as discourse information into a sentence, some
