ABSTRACT Business organisations in this competitive era must provide supportive and attractive work environments to attract the human resources. Satisfied human resources are essential for the healthy operation of all other resources of the organisation. The aim of this research is to study the various demographic characteristics influencing the work environment and job satisfaction of dentists. Survey research method was used to collect the necessary primary data from the participants through the distribution of copies of questionnaire in this study. The questionnaire was administered to 320 dentists working in twelve private dental college hospitals in Tamil Nadu, India to establish their perception on the impact of work environment and job satisfaction witha response rate of 80%. The results of the study revealed that the senior professionals were satisfied with the prevailing conditions in the hospitals and that satisfaction level increases with age. When the working hours per day increased it had negative influence upon the respondents attitude towards the working conditions and career growth opportunities offered by the organizations and the satisfactory level decreased. The study indicated that the working environment affects the physical and psychological wellbeing of the human resources and also their attitude, morale, engagement and productivity. Introduction In Human Resource management one of the most important areas of concern is the performance of human resources at workplace. Individual and organisational performance is both directly related with the positive work environment that will ultimately affect the organisational development and timely achievement of its goals and objectives. A conducive work environment facilitates positive employee morale, goal achievement and employee motivation. Employees are contented, happy and fulfilled of their desires and needs at work when they are satisfied. Employee job satisfaction is a measure to identify if the human resources are contented with their working environment and their job. The quality of the workplace environment impacts the productivity, engagement and morale of the employees.
