On the 9 th April 1918, on the Western Front, the Portuguese Expeditionary Force – at that time a Division level unit belonging to LtGen Haking XI Corps – was wiped out by the 6 th German Army under the offensive Operation Georgette. This outcome was expectable but even though too painful to withstand for the army.
