This study aimed to invesigate the relaionship between family emoional atmosphere, sense of coherence, and afects with tendency toward substance use among university students. Methods In this descripive-correlaive study, a total of 400 students (311 males and 89 females) were selected using mulistage cluster sampling method from Shahid Beheshi Teacher Training University, Mashhad, Iran. Then they completed measures of parental-child interacion raing scale, sense of coherence scale, posiive and negaive afect scale, and tendency toward addicion scale. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlaion and backward muliple regression. Results There were signiicant and negaive relaionships between subscales of family emoional atmosphere, sense of coherence, and posiive afects with tendency toward substance use among students (P˂0.01). Moreover, negaive afects were posiively correlated with tendency toward substance use (r=0.48; P<0.01). Regression analysis also indicated that a posiive family emoional atmosphere and sense of coherence were signiicant negaive predictors of tendency toward substance use whereas negaive afects were signiicant posiive predictors. However, the role of posiive afects in the predicion of tendency toward substance use was not signiicant. Conclusion Addressing family problems, developing the sense of individual coherence, and instrucing strategies to regulate negaive emoions in prevenion and intervenion programs may help reduce tendency toward substance use among university students. Introduction he prevalence of subtance use increases from 1.3% at age 12 to 25.4% at age 21, and people aged 18-24 years have the highet rate of subtance use [5]. This age coincides with tudents’ admission to universities. Thus, university tudents are a high-risk group for subtance T use. Etiological tudies have shown that subtance use is in- luenced by a range of bio-psycho-social factors [6]. Family emotional atmosphere is a familial factor associated with the youths’ subtance use [7], with tudies indicating that poor family relationships may facilitate tendency toward sub- tance use [9]. Sense of coherence is also an individual factor which may inluence subtance use. Exiting literature shows that great coherence is a protective factor againt psychopathology and * Corresponding Author: Ali Akbar Soleimanian, PhD Address: Department of Educaional Sciences, Faculty of Humani ies, Bojnourd University, Bojnourd, Iran.
