The Youth In The K to 12 Curriculum 1.0 The Problem and Its Background One of the most viral topics that have been talked by many citizens in the Philippines, especially the youth, is the issue about the kto12 curriculum. But what is the real meaning and objective/s of this program? The K to 12 Program covers 13 years of basic education including the Kindergarten, Grades 1-6, Grades 7-10 (Junior High School), and Grades 11 and 12 (Senior High School). Kto12 Curriculum is the addition of another 2 years in high school, called senior high school. Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education. Students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in grades 11 and 12. SHS subjects fall under either the Core Curriculum or specific Tracks. But why are we implementing 12 years of basic education and not 11 years? A 12-years program is found to be the adequate period for learning under basic education. It is also a standard for recognition of students and/or professionals abroad (i.e., the Bologna Process for the European Union and the Washington Accord for the United States). Other countries like Singapore have 11 years of compulsory education, but we have 12 to 14 years of pre-university, depending on the track. The Philippines is the last country inasia and one of only three countries worldwide (the order two being angola and Djibouti ) with a 10- years pre-university cycle.
