Impact Copolymer grade of PP (polypropylene) was used in manufacturing the composite laminates due to its high impact strength and fatigue resistance which is required for applications like horseshoe. The thermoplastic composite laminates were fabricated in a hot compression molding machine using the film stacking technique. To determine the mechanical properties of the composite laminates; tensile test and compression test (static), izod impact test and drop weight impact test (dynamic) were performed as per there corresponding ASTM standards. Drop Weight Impact Test was performed as per ASTM D7136 on the composite laminate of 5mm thickness and the force time graph was plotted. From the graph it was observed that the maximum value of force at which the laminate failed was around 4200N which is larger than the maximum ground reaction impact force which a horse’s hoof/horseshoe has to bear (as analyzed in different situations and reported in Table 1 of reference [2]). Thus it was concluded that the FRP horseshoe manufactured from this composite laminate can withstand the maximum impact force acting on it. Dynamic impact simulation on this FRP horseshoe was carried out in ANSYS. The maximum stress value reached in the simulation was between the ranges of 35-45 MPa which is well within the static compressive ultimate strength of 80 MPa as obtained after performing compression test.
