CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the study Shoe polish is a liquid, wax or paste used to polish and shine the leather shoes, it maintains and increases the appearance of the shoe. The first shoe polish was invented in 1906, the brand name of the shoe polish is Kiwi and was developed by William Ramsay, the brand was first launched and sold in Australia, in 2005 it was sold in 180 countries, it was owned by several people, since 1984 it was owned by Sara Lee corporation, previously on 2011 it was sold to S.C. Johnson until today (2018). The brand kiwi was very popular, the brand was a topnotcher in other countries including the United Kingdom and The United states. In shoe polish there are many chemicals which are toxic and if misused it can irritate the skin, but the researchers thought of a product which is nontoxic and a homemade liquid shoe polish that is made up of olive oil and lemon. Lemon is an acid fruit that is botanically a many-seeded pale yellow oblong berry produced by a small thorny citrus tree and that has a rind from which an aromatic oil. The lemon can help clean and polish the leather shoes due to the fact lemons are acidic which can help cleanse any dirt and shine its leather. The olive oil is a liquid fat obtained from olives. Olive oil is also a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. The composition of olive oil varies with the cultivar, altitude, time of harvest and extraction process.
