Abstract: The Chakpas are a very important people group without them the history of Manipur and Christianity in Manipur is incomplete. The Chakpas were one of the earliest settlers in Manipur at the same time Angom Porom Singh the first man to be converted to Christianity was a Chakpa, man of Phayeng. Keywords: Origin of Chakps-The Role of Chakpas in Manipur- Chakpas and Christianity relationship Introduction The Chakpa is one of the oldest people group found in this land before the state gets its name as Manipur. The Chakpas were inhabited before Nongda Lairen Pakhangba ascended the throne of Kangleipak or Meitei laid-back. There are no adequate records of the origin of the Chakpas. W. Ibohal Singh, a noted historian termed the Chakpa as one of the early tribe inhabiting this land and whose way of life basically is quite different from the rest of the people in the valley 1 The Chakpas appeared in the history of Manipur from the time of Poireiton Khunthokpa, one of the earliest Manipuri holy texts. Poireiton came across a village during his migratory journey and found burning of a dead boy. Poireiton query about the incident to a noted Chakpa man named Kon Khang Pha. He told Poireiton that the boy was dead because of an accident. Poireiton was surprised of burning a dead body.
