Abstract
This article has a twofold aim. The author analyzes selected works by the poet Igor’
Severianin from the period before his emigration (1908-1918) in the context of
theories of parody, and compares his texts with Symbolist poetry and the Silver Age
genre of literary parody. Severianin’s innovative poetic techniques (hyperbolism,
paradox, stylistic mixing, laying bare of the device, literal treatment of metaphors,
reductio ad absurdum) are explained through the lens of parody. In the poet’s oeuvre
we find parodic transformation (ironic refraction) of recognizable themes, images,
masks, myths, and lexical clichés of symbolism. Modernist poetic discourse is
therefore objectified by means of playful deflation and mockery from a position of
total authorial irony.
