Batı benim antitezimdir.” Cemil Meriç (2011: 270) Öz Kilisenin eleştirisiyle başlayan, dinin ve feodalitenin insan üzerindeki baskısına karşı başkaldırıyla yönünü bulan modernleşme Batılı ve Batı’ya özgü bir süreçtir. Batı’ya öykünmeyi veya Batılılaşmayı da toplumsal bir tercih olarak değerlendirmek müm- kündür. Ancak toplumsal tercihlerin aksine Batılılaşma yönündeki zorlamalar ise Doğu toplumları için süregelen birçok sıkıntının başlıca sebebidir. Şüphesiz Osmanlı- Türk toplumunun vaziyeti de bu etkiden ari değildir. Çoğu kez iktidar sahiplerince or- taya konulan, Osmanlı-Türk toplumu için gelişmeyi Batılılaşma ile eş tutan hastalıklı bir bakış açısı günümüz Türk toplumuna da sirayet etmiştir. MODERNIZATION AS A PROBLEMATIC SOCIAL CHANGE FORM OF OTTOMAN – TURKISH SOCIETY Abstract The modernization which started with the criticism of the Church and finds its direc- tion by a revolt against the repression of religion and feudalism over man is a pro- cess unique to the West and Western. It is possible to evaluate the emulation to the West or Westernization as a social choice. Yet, contrary to social choices, coercions towards Westernization happen to be the main cause of many ongoing troubles for the Eastern societies. Undoubtedly, the situation of the Ottoman Turkish society is not immune to this influence. The sickly viewpoint of considering development equ- al to Westernization that was often expressed by the ruling elite, has spread into contemporary Turkish society.
