Pandawa, Pucangan, Kartasura, Sukoharjo 57168 zainaldo@gmail.com Abstract Untranslatability has become a major problem in translation since it often resists the process of transferring messages from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL). However, the existence of untranslatability itself is, up to now, debatable. Catford, Popovich, and Newmark state that untranslatability may occur in certain conditions. Meanwhile, Keenan and Wills argue that any texts are translatable due to the universality of language. This paper attempts to accomodate those two opposing opinions by categorizing various cases of untranslatability from a different point of view. It uses the Indonesian subtitles of The Simpsons Movie DVD as the sample of study. However, the result can be considered as applicable in general. The findings show that besides the ones that have been proposed by Cartford, Popovich, and Newmark, and rejected by Keenan and Wills, the cases of untranslatability can be seen from a different perspective. They can be classified into total and partial, general and personal, as well as absolute and relative untranslatability. It is expected that the existing theories on untranslability can be reconstructed or added by considering the findings of this study. Keywords: untranslatability, subtitle, total-partial, general-personal, absolute-relative Ketakterjemahan merupakan masalah besar dalam penerjemahan karena seringkali menjadi penghambat dalam proses pemindahan pesan dari bahasa sumber (BSu) ke bahasa sasaran (BSa). Meskipun demikian, ketakterjemahan itu sendiri masih diperselisihkan keberadaannya. Catford, Popovich, dan Newmark menyatakan bahwa ketakterjemahan bisa terjadi pada kondisi tertentu. Sementeara, Keenan dan Wills berpendapat bahwa teks apapun bisa diterjemahkan mengingat bahasa memiliki sifat universal. Makalah ini berupaya mengakomodasi kedua pendapat yang saling bertentangan tersebut dengan mengelompokkan berbagai masalah ketakterjemahan dari sudut pandang yang berbeda. Yang menjadi sampel penelitian ini adalahsubtitle Bahasa Indonesia DVD film The Simpsons Movie. Meskipun demikian, hasil penelitian ini bisa dianggap berlaku secara umum. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa di samping yang diajukan Cartford, Popovich, dan Newmark, serta disangkal oleh Keenan and Wills, fenomena ketakterjemahan juga bisa dipandang dari perspektif yang berbeda. Bentuk-bentuk ketakterjemahan tersebut dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam ketekterjemahan utuh dan sebagian, ketakterjemahan umum dan personal, serta ketakterjemahan mutlak dan relatif. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini bisa dipertimbangkan untuk merekonstruksi atau melengkapi teori-teori ketakterjemahan yang sudah ada.
