Chapter 20 Comparative Analysis in Language Revitalization Practices Addressing the Challenge Gabriela Pérez Báez, Rachel Vogel, and Eve Okura Koller 1. Introduction This chapter addresses language revitalization broadly and is intended to contribute to our understanding of approaches to preventing or reversing language shif. 1 We refer to these approaches as language revitalization eforts whether they are intended for lan- guage maintenance, development, revitalization, or reclamation of a language. Tere are relatively few case studies reported in the relevant literature to date, and in many cases, the same ones are cited again and again. Hence, the intent of this chapter is to ex- pand knowledge of ongoing revitalization eforts beyond these already commonly cited Tis research has been made possible by funding from the Recovering Voices initiative of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. We are grateful to our partners at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa: Lyle Campbell, William O’Grady, Ken Rehg, and Andrea Berez and their students and alumni: Bradley Rentz, Raina Heaton, Carolina Aragon, and Kaori Ueki. We thank the assistants who contributed to this research: Kate Murray, Jessica Nesbitt, Chris Pérez, Skyler Rachlin, and Carlos Cisneros and colleagues Daryl Baldwin, Haley de Korne, and Rozenn Milin who provided us with valuable feedback on the pilot design. Above all, we are grateful to the respondents of the surveys analyzed in the pilot for taking the time to share their experiences with us. 1 “Language shif” is defned as the process of one language replacing another in an increasing number of domains of use. “Reversing language shif” (RLS), then, is a transparent term referring to the eforts to reverse this process. Fishman (1991) discusses in detail how those undertaking language planning for RLS are faced with the need to address questions related to the prestige of dialects, competing views on standardization in RLS, and the role of developing corpora to assist in RLS.
